CARE OF THE OLDER PERSON

 

Course Description:

This course is designed to equip learners with the knowledge and skills to provide care for older people in a variety of settings. The course is a minimum requirement for most private nursing homes and is a mandatory module on the FETAC Healthcare Certificate.

At the end of this course you should be able to:

·        Demonstrate good work practices in the provision of care for older people

  • Understand the concept of the ageing process and promote positive attitudes to ageing
  • Be able to meet the full range of needs  (physical, social, emotional, psychological, recreational, financial, environmental and spiritual) of older people in a variety of care settings
  • Enhance the quality of life of the older person in a care setting.

Entry Requirements: Participants should have Leaving Cert, FETAC level 4 Certificate or equivalent and/or relevant work experience.

 

Language requirements: A sufficient command of English language, both spoken and written is required for this course.

 

Independent Study: You will be required to do independent study outside class time in order to complete assessments.

 

Resources required for successful participation: Assignments must be typed therefore access to a computer is necessary for this course.

 

Accreditation: This course leads to a FETAC level 5 component certificate in “Care of the Older Person”

 

Assessment details Participants are required to do a project and a skills demonstration

 

Transfer & progression opportunities: Care of the Older Person is a stand-alone module but is also a mandatory module on the level 5 FETAC Healthcare Support award. Successful participants can study further modules to achieve a full FETAC award
